Eighteen years

Eighteen Years is a collection of 220+ poems. Madisen Kuhn, popularly known as m.k., writes honestly and personally about the thoughts and feelings that come with finding your way.

Eighteen Years is here to tell you that you are not alone. It is meant to be curled up with at night, accompanied by a cup of tea. It's a hug in book-form. It is there to comfort you when fuzzy socks and ice cream just aren't enough. It will inspire you to pick up a pen and write down thoughts of your own. It will help you to say the words that feel stuck in your chest.

Take it on the train. Take it to the beach. Keep it on your nightstand. Keep it in your backpack. Read it at the park on benches beneath hundred-year-old trees. Read it while it's raining. Read it when you're happy. Read it when your heart aches.  Eighteen Years is meant to be bent and worn, written in, tear-stained, and loved. This book is for you.

praise for eighteen years

Absolutely fantastic collection of poetry. The format of it is incredible as you can see Madisen grow and develop over the course of the book. Her writing gets more mature, she becomes more self-aware, and she develops a practicality in her approach to the problems she writes about.

There are poems for every season of life housed within these pages. It is a collection that I will continue to read over and over again until the ink begins to fade from the pages and I have found reasons to underline every single line in the book.

I don’t have enough good things to say about this book. Maddie’s poetry made me feel a lot of things, and reading it was a very cathartic experience for all of the pain and heartbreak I’ve been through. Even if you don’t like poetry, I think you’ll like this book. It’s like reading the journal of you incredibly talented and artistic best friend. And Laura’s illustrations are beautiful. If I had to choose a favorite (which is so hard), it would probably be indigo. So good.

i was hit with waves of inspiration. it made me want to grab my pen and write about all the things i could never (and still can’t) write. i have to remind myself every now and then that it’s okay to be vulnerable.

It’ll always be something to carry me through every rough situation and I am thankful I have the privilege to keep this book with me for the rest of my life.

what’s...really great about these poems is they speak for everyone- those who have faith, those who have loved and lost, those who are apprehensive about life. I reccommend this book to anyone and everyone, it is truly a beautiful collection of poems...

Madisen always finds a way to pull me in with her words. When I got it back in November I’ve let 5 others borrow it and they’ve all purchased copies of their own. Her words seem to relate to everyone and that’s so rare. Reading her words is as if I’m writing them down myself. I can read any of her poems when sad, happy, and feeling alone.

Eighteen Years is a book full of emotion and thoughts. She talks about relationships, anxiety, depression, stress and all the things teenagers deal with. This novel is very deep and makes you read into your thoughts...I have cried several times while reading this book because Madisen just “got me” and her words really moved me. I have started looking at things differently due to this novel.

This collection of poetry brings upon a deep feeling of melancholy. Madisen Kuhn’s writing is so raw & fervent, taking all of the 3 AM thoughts that I thought could only belong to me & sharing it in a beautiful way. The words within the pages feel so familiar, like friends I haven’t spoken to in a while, but still comfortable with.

I have read this book but I am certain that I am not actually done reading this book. In years to come I will pull this book from my shelf & flip through it, reading the notes I have made & see how I have grown as a person.

This book felt like it was written for me.

Maddie has a way with words in which I cannot even begin to comprehend. I will always love and appreciate the honesty in her poems, and, despite them being so personal and raw, are so relatable to anyone of any age who’s ever experienced utter heartbreak, indescribable joy, or motivation to better themselves.

I received this book as a Christmas gift & it’s hands down the absolute the best gift I got. I finished it in one reading because I simply could not put it down. The way the poems were written & the lessons I learned really hit home. My heart went through happiness while reading, but it also ached. Many tears were shed over this reading, but I plan to read it again and again and again. This is officially my favorite book & hope for many more written by her.

Irrespective of whether the subject matter of the poem is explicit or not, there is always something I’ve found to resonate with in what I’ve read so far. This book is so beautiful and by far my favorite.
